SAUK COUNTY (WKOW) – The Boys & Girls Club of West Central WI – Baraboo/Sauk County is warning people of a scam where impersonators ask for donations and offer cookies in return.
They say in a Facebook post that they have received scam reports where someone not associated with their organization asks for donations for the Club at local supermarkets.
The Club says these types of scams happen often, but they say you shouldn’t let “these individuals rob you of your giving spirit.”
“Our Boys & Girls Club NEEDS YOU!” indicates the position.
The Club says there are a few questions you can ask to avoid being scammed.
- Is the person wearing Boys and Girls Club attire or professional attire? Members typically wear club logo shirts or business attire to fundraising events.
- Are promotional or marketing materials available? If donations are requested, there is usually a banner, brochure, information pack or professional marketing material available.
- Is the request for an event where other nonprofits are located? If not, is there a special event associated with the company, such as sharing parties, company-sponsored promotions or program launches or a brat fry? While not impossible, the Club is almost never outside of a business asking for cash donations without another event nearby.
- Have you seen anything on the club’s social media saying they’ll be there? The club says they want to see you when they go somewhere, so there will usually be a post about it.
If in doubt, the Club advises you to use your best judgement.
You can also send donations directly to Club Headquarters in Tomah at PO Box 765, Tomah, WI 54660 with a letter or memo line from “Baraboo” to keep your money local. You can also stop by the Club at the Civic Center, or donate online at www.BGCWCW.org.
