CLUB RUGBY WRAP: Among the pigeons as Masi puts one on Hamediehs

Van der Stel-Evergreens center Colin Lombard loses the ball in the tackle against Hamediehs. Van der Stel-Evergreens lost to Sir Lowrians on Saturday by 43-42 but are still top of the Promotion League table.

Masiphumelele put the proverbial cat among the pigeons by beating one of the title contenders Hamediehs 29-25 in the Promotion League at Noordhoek on Saturday 3rd September.

That wasn’t the only upset of the weekend as Van der Stel-Evergreens, currently top of the table, lost 43-42 to Sir Lowrians in Stellenbosch.

With these upsets, it is still undecided who will be crowned champion on Saturday, October 8 as Blakes, who had a bye, is also in contention.

The nine teams competing in the Promotion League are the top three teams from the City, Northerns and Southern leagues, and three of the nine will be promoted to Western Province Club Rugby’s Super League C next year. The City League is represented by Lagunya, Atlantis and Northerns, the Southern League by Violets, Hamediehs and Masiphumelele, while Blakes, Sir Lowrians and Van der Stel-Evergreens each represent the Northern League.

Each team competes once to determine who finishes in positions one and two on the Top 9 log, and teams in positions three and four will face off in a play-off on neutral ground to determine who will join the top two in the year. next in Super League C

The bottom three teams in the Super League will automatically fall into the North, South and City Leagues next year.

At Stellenbosch last week, Sir Lowrians wanted to win the most as they lost 28-23 to Hamediehs after trailing. A mistake in the last minute of the game cost them dearly and saw them finish second.

The same happened against Van der Stel-Evergreens, where they also had to catch up. This time they made the best of the situation with the last try. With less than a minute on the clock and Van der Stel-Evergreens leading by four points, Sir Lowrians managed to push the score to 43-42 in their favour.

The Violets were in a frantic mood at Chukker Road at Lansdowne against Atlantis and sent the latter home with their tails between their legs with a 40-0 beating.

Lagunya defeated Northerns at Elsies River, the second time this year, by 32-22. The Northerners have yet to register a victory, although they were awarded a bonus point in a previous game for losing by less than seven points.

Sir Lowrians and Van der Stel will play over the next two weeks, starting with the derby on Saturday September 10 against Van der Stel-Evergreens at the Bergzicht Sportsfield. Blakes next face Hamediehs at Athlone before finishing the Championship with the match against Sir Lowrians at Cloetesville on Saturday October 1.

In Super League A, B and C, the quarter-finals were determined in the Top 6 competition where the top two teams from each league automatically qualified for the semi-finals.
