Fly high as activities and events begin to unfold

Jones and Company's Cheryl Jones has become a Destin Snowbird favorite. She delighted the flock at meetings on December 7 and Tuesday morning January 11. She will also host the annual Valentine's Day dinner dance on February 14.
Sue and Frank Snow of Traverse City, Michigan are the first to board the bus for Destin Snowbird's first trip to Biloxi IP Casino. Casino outings are scheduled every Monday and snowbirds can sign up during Tuesday morning meetings.

Before I start reporting on everything that’s going on, I’d like to give special thanks to Cheryl Jones of Jones and Company. Cheryl and her band performed for Destin Snowbird’s AGM on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. They were so entertaining and enjoyable that a unanimous decision was made to invite them back. However, no one knew that the invitation would be extended and accepted so soon.

Like everyone else, snowbirds have faced a lot of uncertainty because of the virus. On short notice, we lost the services of a scheduled artist. Cheryl answered the call and stepped in (albeit without her “company”) to the delight of the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. rallies on Tuesday, January 11. She has also agreed to host the Valentine’s Day dinner dance on Monday, February 14. It’s a wonder how Cheryl can fit us into her busy schedule. She and her company are reserved every Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at AJ’s on the port of Destin, and every Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Bric-A-Brac’s

But to hear her sing, it’s obvious that she really loves what she does. She exudes love for music and people. Thank you Cheryl Jones!

The first scheduled weekly bus trip to Biloxi was on Monday, January 10. Players paid $25 if part of a duo or $38 if single. Everyone received $20 back in free play from the IP casino. Two participants received $15 food stamps for having birthdays in January. There were no reports of big jackpots being won, but everyone had a great time. No doubt word of mouth will generate more interest. Sign-up sheets are available at each Tuesday morning meeting.

As in the past, Northwest Florida State College offered free tickets to the men’s basketball game on Saturday, January 15. Snowbirds guests were treated to an exciting rivalry between the Raiders and Pensacola State College. Northwest Florida emerged victorious beating the Pirates 65-54.

Tickets for David Seering’s Children in Crisis benefit concert won’t be free, but they will be selling like hotcakes, especially after David’s incredible performance at the Tuesday morning meeting on January 18. David’s range of talents knows no bounds, and he delighted his audience with a variety of songs, but the highlight of his visit was a sample of what to expect at his next performance. -benefit, “A Night at the Cabaret”, Monday, February 21, at Shoreline Church on Palmetto Street. Tickets will continue to be available at the back of the meeting room each Tuesday morning.

The bus trip to Todd Herendeen’s Dinner Theater in Panama City sold out, but those who couldn’t get a ticket are still in luck. Todd will be the moderator for the meeting on Tuesday January 25th. He will also be at Lulu the same day from 3-6 p.m. for the TGIT party (thank goodness it’s Tuesday). Tickets for this are $5 at the door and member badges will need to be shown.

The Singles Friendship Club will also meet after Tuesday’s meeting. The venue this week will be at The Back Porch.

For newly arrived snowbirds, major changes have been made to the schedule this season. There will be only one meeting each Tuesday morning, and it will start at 10:00. Registration will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. before the meetings.

Monday, January 24 will be the only Harbor Party cruise offered this season. Tickets are on sale at press time, but those interested should contact Ruth Beckett at 616-570-7818 or [email protected]
