James Langton promotes the Coastal Rumble to be held in Opunake.

Taranaki’s interclub boxing will return to the ring in July with fighters from Opunake and Clifton facing off as part of the Coastal Rumble.

Promoter James Langton, a former New Zealand heavyweight champion, said it had been more than 25 years since a full interclub boxing card had taken place in the area and there was genuine enthusiasm for the card, which was scheduled to take place at the Opunake Events Center on July 2.

“It shows the growth of the sport, not just in Taranaki but across New Zealand,” he said.

Langton’s Barbwire Boxing Club will have three amateur fighters taking on opponents from Clifton, while a corporate bout is also scheduled.

Heavyweight Bobby Katene will face Dylan Barham, Caleb Thomas will face Jono Heaps while Manase Filhia will meet Dave Beech. The corporate fight sees Toni Tuitupou vs. Connor Perry.

The main event on the card will feature the professional debut of Trish McKenzie who will fight Ayisha Abied from Auckland.

“Barbwire Boxing hopes to make this our annual event and we will put up a shield between the two clubs,” Langton said.

Tickets can be purchased at the event center while corporate tables were also available, he said.
