Bored Ape Yacht Club was one of the largest non-fungible token collections of the last year. The collection of 10,000 Bored Apes has drawn collectors, investors, athletes and NFT celebrities to its exclusive club. Here’s the latest news on another high-profile figure Apeing in.

What happened: Speculation has grown over the world’s richest person joining the list of celebrities who own a Bored Ape NFT. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk was recently photographed with the co-founders of the cryptocurrency company Moon Pay.

MoonPay has helped bring several celebrities into the NFT space. Paris Hilton, Jimmy Fallon, Post Malone and justin bieber were among the celebrities who struck deals with MoonPay and received Bored Apes.

This week, MoonPay purchased two Bored Apes that many believe would be a good fit for Elon Musk: Bored Ape #4976, which features a cowboy hat and could be connected to his new residence in Texas and the opening of a Tesla Gigafactory in the state.

The other is Bored Ape #4976, which was purchased for 95 Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) ($245,000), has the following features:

  • Purple background: 13% monkeys
  • Biker Vest: 3%
  • Eyes closed: 7%
  • Blue fur: 5%
  • Cowboy hat: 4%
  • Bored mouth: 23%

MoonPay also bought Bored Ape #1837 rare gold fur for 569 ETH, or about $1.5 million. Ape #1837 has the following traits:

  • Orange background: 13%
  • Wool turtleneck: 2%
  • Crazy eyes: 4%
  • Solid gold fur: 0.46%

Ape #1837 is one of only 46 to have the rare gold fur trait, ranking it in the top 250 rarest Bored Apes in the collection. The floor on Golden Furry Monkeys is currently 999 ETH with only two listed on OpenSea.

Why it matters: Bored Ape #4976’s purchase came just hours after Musk’s photo with MoonPay executives.

“The image is real. You don’t have any additional details to share at this time. But stay tuned to the website for exciting news to come,” a MoonPay spokesperson told Benzinga.

Adding further speculation of Musk joining Bored Apes was Deepak Thaplyalthe former owner of Ape #1837.

“Thought I got it at 690,420 ETH. Well… as long as it goes to @elonmusk I’ll be happy,” Thapliyal said in a post. Tweeter, while tagging MoonPay.

Musk joining Bored Apes would be a huge event as he is the richest person in the world and one of the most followed people on social media (75 million followers on Twitter).

Musk is known for driving up the price of cryptocurrencies and stocks by tweeting about them, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), Dogecoin and even GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME) all having received boosts from his tweets in 2021.

When it was revealed that Bieber had become a holder of a Bored Ape, the floor price rose rapidly and broke through the 100 ETH mark.

While speculation is rife about Musk joining Bored Apes, there are also some reservations from those who have seen the photo and know Musk. The photo gives the impression that it was not a planned meeting and that Musk may have been approached while attending a listening party for by Kanye West New album.

Musk has expressed his opposition to NFTs on several occasions. He compared NFTs to possible hallucinations using a meme asking “Are those NFTs in the room right now.”

Musk also told the co-founder of Dogecoin Billy Marcus that “NFTs are pegging the dollar” in December.

Musk also slammed Twitter for rolling out its new NFT Profile Picture feature.

“Twitter is spending engineering resources on this bs while crypto scammers throw a spambot block party in every thread!?” Musk said in a tweet.

MoonPay bought six Bored Apes in the last 15 days and now holds 13 Bored Apes in its OpenSea wallet. Whether Musk is the latest to enter the group of Bored Ape holders or not, there is a good chance that MoonPay will attract more celebrities.

The floor price of Bored Apes is 88 ETH at the time of writing.
