Leeds United reject West Ham’s club-record £50m bid for Kalvin Phillips

West Ham United have had a record £50million bid rejected by Leeds United for Kalvin Phillips.

The bid for the England international was submitted two weeks ago and was immediately rebuffed by Leeds who have no intention of selling the England international until the transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday.

Leeds also later rejected an offer from West Ham to sign Brazil international striker Raphinha and will not allow either player to leave at this time.

It remains to be seen whether West Ham will return with another offer for Phillips this summer – or even Raphinha – with top sources admitting they cannot sign him now. They do not intend to make a new offer in the next two days.

The scale of West Ham’s offer for Phillips and their interest in Raphinha show funds are available for manager David Moyes as he attempts to strengthen his squad for the second half of the season. West Ham’s record signing is striker Sebastien Haller who cost £45million in 2019, although he was then sold to Ajax a year later for less than half that fee.

Moyes is also on the hunt for another centre-back but has so far failed to identify a suitable signing but it is hoped deals will be agreed with a number of targets.

Phillips is out until March with a hamstring injury and forged an impressive central midfield partnership with West Ham captain Declan Rice at the European Championships last summer.

Although West Ham have clearly wanted to pair Phillips with Rice, it may well be that the 25-year-old is also lined up to replace him given the expected interest in Rice at the end of this season.

West Ham are currently fifth, having slipped from fourth, and if they finish in the Champions League places or win the Europa League it would boost their chances of keeping Rice.

Spurs attempt to hijack Aston Villa transfer for Juventus’ Rodrigo Bentancur

by Mike McGrath and Sam Dean

Tottenham are working on a deal for Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur as they try to strengthen Antonio Conte’s side for the second half of the season.

Spurs have negotiated with the Italian giants for Swedish striker Dejan Kulusevski to add to Conte’s attack after missing out on Barcelona on a deal for Wolves’ Adama Traore.

Bentancur, 24, was targeted by Aston Villa earlier in the window and French club Lyon have also eyed the Uruguay international, although they have strengthened that position with Romain Faivre.

Conte wants a midfielder and Sofyan Amrabat or Fiorentina’s Bentancur are the options to pursue for Spurs director of football Fabio Paratici.

Spurs have been frustrated so far in the window and this weekend were dismissed by Ollie Tanner, a 19-year-old winger who plays for non-league Lewes FC.
