The Rotary Club of Laredo will host a golf tournament

The Rotary Club of Laredo invites the community to participate in its second international golf tournament, to be held October 15 at the Casa Blanca Golf Course.

Juanita Lira, Co-Chair of the Golf Tournament Committee, said that each year they look for a main event to raise funds whose purpose is to support the organization’s community projects.

“Each year, our club hosts and hosts at least one major fundraiser to support our community projects, which serve to improve the lives of our fellow Los Dos Laredos residents,” Lira said. “Because we started having challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to put our efforts on hold until last year when we were finally able to hold our first golf tournament, thanks mainly to the efforts of our members. – Diana and Alfredo Espinoza – who have dedicated themselves to guiding this initiative.

Lira added that the first tournament was a great success – in which the Rotary Club of Laredo honored the memory of Dave Leyendecker – now the club has decided to organize this second international golf tournament.

“It is a great pleasure to report that the response from the public has been magnificent. We had 72 teams participating and we managed to secure 20 sponsors for the event,” Lira said. “This year, we want to promote the importance of brotherhood internationally. So we invited golfers from both sides of the border. These sites include golfers from Laredo and other parts of Texas, as well as participants from Monterrey, Saltillo or other cities in Mexico.

Lira said that with this effort, they hope to increase fellowship and networking among golfers and Rotarians on both sides of the border.

“In addition, we want to be able to start exploring various ideas to plan and carry out different projects in the future that can benefit our communities internationally. This achievement can help other Rotary clubs on both sides of the border set up humanitarian initiatives similar to this one to serve those most in need,” she said.

Diana Espinoza, co-chair of the golf tournament committee, said that thanks to the support of the community, they were able to meet the fundraising goal for last year’s tournament.

“We have used these funds to support various community projects. These included donations to the Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center and Best Friends For Life. We also sent six high school students to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program, which aims to help them develop their leadership skills to better serve our community,” Espinoza said. “We also use a portion of these funds to promote our international connections and support the Institute of Science and Technology, a high school in Nuevo Laredo that is dedicated to educating and preparing young people so they can function on both sides of the border with efficiency and fraternity.

“We are part of a rotating set of international clubs dedicated to keeping the Rio Grande and our surroundings clean and healthy.”

Espinoza also added that the Laredo Rotary Club continues to support Laredo College and Texas A&M International University scholarships to promote scholars’ academic advancement and help prepare them for careers that suit them while supporting them. helping to serve the community.
