Xavi wants Barcelona to renew Busquets if the club sign Laporta’s favorite midfielder

FC Barcelona are currently looking for midfield reinforcements. They’ve been linked with moves for Ilkay Gundogan and Youri Tielemans lately, both of whom are identified as the perfect fit for the inside job.

However, the club’s other priority is to sign a defensive midfielder as Sergio Busquets’ current contract expires at the end of the season.

According Gerard Romero, there has been some disagreement in Barcelona over the club’s desired goal in the defensive midfield position. Head coach Xavi Hernandez and sporting director Mateu Alemany are currently in favor of a transfer for Martin Zubimendi.

The Real Sociedad star has La Liga experience and could adapt to Barcelona’s style of football quite quickly. However, club president Joan Laporta wants Barca to sign Ruben Neves.

Indeed, the Portuguese international was offered by superagent Jorge Mendes, who has a good relationship with Laporta.

Currently plying his trade for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Neves isn’t lacking in experience either, having featured in 228 competitive games for the Premier League side. With his contract at Molineux also expiring in 2024, he could be available at a relatively cheaper price than Zubimendi.

However, if Barcelona end up signing Neves, Xavi will ask the club to extend Busquets’ contract. The veteran midfielder is still rated highly by the Barca coach, who isn’t convinced of Neves’ quality.

There have been several reports claiming that the club’s technical staff were not entirely won over by the Portuguese international.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Barcelona’s pursuit of a defensive midfielder takes shape in the coming months.

It won’t be surprising to see the Catalans looking for other alternatives in the market as well, especially as the club look to sign profitable options.
